A young David Lean makes a fleeting appearance on the other side of the camera in the Quota quickie, Money for Speed (1933)
Between 1942 and 1984, David Lean directed sixteen feature films. It is some measure of his continuing popularity that all of them have been issued on DVD. It is probably easier to offer a complete appraisal of his work than that of just about any other British director of his generation. The comments attached to the above links are my own attempt to do so. They amount to a subjective, personal response, but I hope they will encourage wider debate about the nature of Lean's achievement.
