Staff Giving FAQs

The following provides some general information about staff giving at Queen Mary. If you have additional questions, please contact us at 020 7882 6429 or email

What is staff giving and why is it important?

Staff giving is a campus-wide collaboration that provides staff from across the university with an opportunity to directly impact QMUL students, as well as the larger QMUL community, through collective donations. These gifts signify your endorsement of the University and of QMUL students, announcing to alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations that QMUL is an institution worthy of support and that support starts at ‘home’.

When can staff make a gift?

Gifts from staff are welcome all throughout the year. The Development Directorate will contact departments and faculties at different times throughout the year inviting them to support the campaign.

What is payroll (GAYE) giving?

Payroll giving is one of the most convenient and tax effective ways to make your gift. By completing a payroll Give As You Earn Instruction Form [PDF 48KB], you can choose the amount to have automatically deducted from your pay check each month.
Your donation is taken from your pre-tax salary, meaning that part of your donation comes from money that would have otherwise gone to HMRC.

For example making a £20 donation to QMUL:
As a 20% taxpayer:
Total donated to QMUL £20.00
You pay £16.00
Reduction in tax £4.00

As a 40% taxpayer:
Total donated to QMUL £20.00
You pay £12.00
Reduction in tax £8.00

Can I choose where to direct my gift?

Of course. This year we are focusing on widening opportunity for students at QMUL, therefore the areas of bursaries and scholarships have been identified as priorities, but you may designate your gift to any school, department or programme. For more information or to discuss further please contact
