Emily Chung, MBBS (2007)
Emily spent her elective with the Reproductive and Child Health Alliance in Cambodia, an NGO which works to improve health at grassroots level.
She said: "Visiting local groups, I had the opportunity to see a health education programme which used local volunteers to train villagers about safe motherhood, child health and infectious diseases.
Simple, yet effective and memorable methods were used using photographs and placards, helping to avoid the issue of illiteracy, yet offering stimulating images that could be retained.
Thanks to Barts and The London Alumni Association for supporting my elective and enabling me to see a unique and different health education programme at work.”
Queen Mary’s strategic aim is to provide gifted young people with access to a world-class education.
The range of our student support includes bursaries, scholarships and prizes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition, elective awards provide our medical and dental students with the opportunity to travel and observe health care provision in countries around the world.
Your support will mean that more of our students can benefit from these opportunities.
Shima Bashar, currently studying for a degree in English, receives a Queen Mary and Westfield Alumni Benevolent Fund Bursary.
"The bursary has helped me in many ways; I am able to buy books, visit museums and go to the theatre, which before university would have been impossible. The bursary has removed the fear and stress of ‘running out of money’. I cannot thank Queen Mary alumni enough, and hope that they will continue to provide these benefits for other students in the future."
