humanities building

Due for completion in 2010, the new Arts and Humanities Building, designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre, will add a new dimension to the Mile End Road, between the School of Law and Barclays Bank.

In keeping with Queen Mary’s tradition of developing engaging and workable buildings, the four-storey building will provide a new home for the Department of History and a new studio for film studies and drama students.

A 300-seat lecture theatre will be at the heart of the building, with additional new seminar rooms, teaching space and an area for conferences and events.

Humanities Artwork Fund

The campuses of Queen Mary house a remarkable collection of public art treasures which, over the years, has been added too.

Beginning with William Hogarth’s Christ by the Pool of Bethesda which hangs on the staircase leading to the Great Hall at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, including Eric Gill’s 1936 Muse panels on the People’s Palace in the Mile End Road and, more recently, Bruce McLean’s molecular science-inspired stained glass panels in the walls of the Blizard Building in Whitechapel.

The Humanities Artwork Fund has been established to raise funds for newly commissioned works of art which will decorate the walls of the new Humanities Building.

A number of alumni have already made generous donations to support this appeal and the Westfield Trust has guaranteed to match future gifts raised for this purpose.

You can make a donation using our standard Gift Form - please indicate that this is the area where you wish your gift to be used. Alternatively, contact Susan Nettle on +44 (0)20 7882 7423 or email s.nettle@qmul.ac.uk for further information.
