Alumni, family and friends, Queen Mary, University of London

The London Hospital Dental Club

Established in 1956, The London Hospital Dental Club (LHDC) is dedicated to the interests of former students and staff of The London Hospital Dental School or Institute of Dentistry, as it is now known.

The Club hosts an Annual Clinical Meeting (ACM) in early Spring which offers alumni the opportunity to extend their professional development, as well as to meet up with their contemporaries. Each year an annually elected President organises and hosts a programme of talks on topics of current interest by leading practitioners at the ACM.

Members of the London Hospital Dental Club receive our annual publication The London Hospital Dental Club Newsletter which is published at the end of the year. This is in addition to the Barts and The London Chronicle (BLC). The LHDC Newsletter provides details about the forthcoming Annual Clinical Meeting programme; news from the Institute of Dentistry; and information about how gifts by members to the London Hospital Dental Club Benevolent Fund, the Malcolm Jenkins and John Richards Travelling Scholarship Fund and the Queen Mary, University of London Foundation are supporting current students. Items for inclusion in the LHDC Newsletter and BLC are always welcome from members. Contact the Editorial team.

Members are invited to attend over 100 events each year as organised by the Alumni Relations and Events teams, in addition to receiving help with finding lost friends and support with organising their own reunions. LHDC members are also able to take advantage of all of the benefits available to wider Queen Mary, University of London alumni.

Friday 2 - Saturday 3 March - BOOK ONLINE
London Hospital Dental Club Annual Clinical Meeting
This year's programme has been curated by the President for 2011-12, Professor Paul Wright (q BDS, The London, 1969). Paul, who recently retired from the Dental School as Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry, has long been an active member and supporter of the London Hospital Dental Club and the School both in his capacity as a former student and as a member of staff and former Dean.

Joining us to mark, not only Paul's contributions but also, the Centenary year of The London Hospital Dental School, will be a range of speakers of national and international standing. Topics across this two-day event will include restorative dentistry, paediatric dentistry and radiology, amalgam and its alternatives, caries removal, 3D radiology, modern prosthodontics, all against the background of the latest Adult Dental Health Survey. On Friday we will be joined by Stuart Johnson, Chair of the BDA Representative Body and Member of the FDI World Dental Federation, Dental Amalgam Task Team; Chris Lynch, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Cardiff Dental School; Avijit Banerjee, Professor of Cariology and Operative Dentistry and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at King's College London, as well as Ferranti Wong, Professor of Paediatric Dentistry, and Jimmy Makdissi, Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, both from Barts and The London.

The Slack Medal will be presented to Dayananda Samarawickrama, or "Professor Sam" as he is affectionately known, (q PhD Dentistry, The London, 1975), Emeritus Professor of Conservative Dentistry. The Evelyn Sprawson Lecture will be given by Rupert Hoppenbrouwers, Head of the Dental Defence Union (DDU).

A drinks' reception will bring Friday's programme to a close, followed by a three-course subscription dinner at Le Café du Marché which is located in the heart of the City of London's old French quarter. Transport will be provided to the restaurant.

On Saturday we are delighted to welcome Sue Gregory, Deputy Chief Dental Officer, who will talk about the 2009 Adult Dental Health Survey. Mike Fenlon, Professor of Prosthodontics at King's College London, will follow, as will Shakeel Shahdad, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Barts and The London. Lunch will be held nearby at Needo Grill, a traditional Pakistani restaurant, on New Road.

Following lunch, we are pleased to offer two optional visits to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry or the Centre of the Cell. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry is Britain's oldest surviving manufacturing company while the Centre of the Cell is the first multimedia science education centre to be located within working laboratories in the heart of the Blizard Building on our Whitechapel campus. Please note that places for both visits, in particular the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, are limited so do book early to avoid disappointment.

All events will take place on our Whitechapel campus: lectures will take place in the Perrin Lecture Theatre in the Blizard Building, Newark Street, E1 2AT. Registration, coffee, the Trade Show, lunch and the drinks' reception will be held in Laird Hall (formerly known as College Hall).
