The Green Mary staff workbook is QMUL’s competitive sustainability accreditation scheme. Across QMUL staff form teams and follow a workbook of sustainability-themed criteria and activities between September and May each year. In early June their work is audited by trained student volunteers, and their hard work is celebrated during the annual Sustainability awards in July. Teams can achieve Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum awards for their work.
Every year the Green Mary workbook launches in September during Sustainability Day. From this point onwards teams can register to take part, and start completing actions in the workbook.
The workbook is filled with criteria which have an environmental, social, or economic benefit for your office. They are diverse, fun, achievable, and many allow you to unleash your inner creativity. For example, teams in the past have saved money for their department by replacing bottle-fed with mains-fed water coolers; others have reached out to other departments and met new people by forming lunchtime charity craft groups in their building.
The QMUL Sustainability team are on-hand to help if your team gets stuck with a criteria. Just email firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll get in touch to help out.
Green Mary Workshops
To help teams through the workbook, we offer a number of fun and interactive workshops through the course of the Green Mary year.
In May the Sustainability team train student volunteers as Green Mary environmental auditors. The auditors then visit staff teams to determine which criteria they completed, and decide which award they should receive for that year.
The Sustainability Awards
QMUL celebrates the hard work of its staff and students at the annual Sustainability Awards in July. Green Mary teams will receive their awards, along with a trophy and prize during the ceremony.
