Legal Advice Centre

The Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre (LAC) provides a free, accessible, client centred advice service to the local community and wider public. Advice on a range of issues is provided by undergraduate and postgraduate law students, with the support of professional solicitors.

The Centre aims to make free legal advice as accessible as possible, while enabling students to learn from practical experience. They welcome all enquiries from the public, and clients come to the advice centre from a wide variety of backgrounds, presenting a wide range of legal issues.

Their seven key areas span a wide breadth of legal support, offering advice to support individuals, groups and businesses on a range of issues:

  • Law in General
  • Pink Law
  • Law for the Arts
  • Criminal Justice Project
  • Revenge Porn Law
  • Supporting those who serve
  • qLegal for tech start-ups

Specialist branches such as ‘qlegal’ and ‘Law for the Arts’ particularly appeal to the fast growing industries in East London, based around the digital businesses in ‘Tech City’ and the creative industries boom around Shoreditch, Dalston and Hoxton. Meanwhile ‘Law in General’ has particular resonance in one of the most socio-economically diverse  boroughs in the UK, offering advice in a range of legal areas including housing, immigration, family, employment, data protection and corporate law.

Since its opening in 2006, the Centre has advised over 1480 clients. In 2014-15 the Centre has 74 undergraduate law students and 36 postgraduate students volunteering as Student Advisers, with more than 150 solicitors who volunteer as Student Supervisors.

By providing a free legal service to the local community, the Centre gives the opportunity for Queen Mary to use its knowledge and teaching to benefit those who live in the area we operate in, and beyond.
